NZ’s top harmony group to perform at Waikato Show
The Waikato Rivertones, New Zealand’s current champion four-part harmony chorus, is to perform at the New Waikato Show this month.
In 2007 the group were judged the world’s best mid-sized harmony chorus at the World Harmony Classic contest in San Antonio, Texas – the first time the award has left the United States.
The group heads to Denver, Colorado in October to represent New Zealand in the world harmony championships after soundly winning the New Zealand contest in May 2011.
The Rivertones have also represented New Zealand twice at world contests in Nashville, Tennessee in 2002 and 2009.
More than 80 women from throughout the Waikato, Bay of Plenty, King Country, Auckland, Rotorua and Taupo sing with the Rivertones. They’re aged from 16 to over 70, and from all walks of life – students, teachers, doctors, nurses, young mums, business women and retired women.
The Rivertones have regularly appeared on television and on stage in concerts in Hamilton, Tauranga and around the Waikato region as well as competing and singing further afield. The group’s music ranges from standards, big ballads and classic well-known songs to more modern music by artists such as Queen and Billy Joel, all sung in a cappella (unaccompanied) harmony.
