North Island Colourbration Alpaca Show

The Alpaca Association of New Zealand runs a number of shows for its members and for the public throughout the country. One of the most important ribbon shows is the North Island Colourbration Show which will be held on 26 – 28 April 2013 as part of the Waikato Show.

'Colourbration' is not a spelling mistake. This show is designed to showcase the wide variety of natural coloured fleece sported by alpaca and to reward the successful breeders of black, brown, grey, fawn and white animals with their own Supreme Champions. Members of the public will also spot that there are two types of alpaca too – the more sheep-like Huacaya and the dreadlocked Suri. Both grow exceedingly fine and strong fibre which produces superior yarn suitable for woven cloth and fine knitting.

The Sponsors for this year's Colourbration Show are:

Trade Stands will be provided by Riverdale Alpacas, Silverhill Alpacas, Nevalea Alpacas and Awaawaroa Alpacas (www.awalpaca.co.nz) where alpaca produce of all kinds will be for admiration and sale.

Large contingents of school children have been known to flock to the alpaca part of the show and this year the organisers have arranged coluring competitions, 'Give it a go' felting demonstrations, junior judging classes and plenty of cria (baby alpacas) to enjoy.

The public ring will be in full use all three days and a big display of the fleeces, previously judged, will show off the best of class in all the different colours and styles of fleece. And yes, there will be some you can touch, too.
